Pregnancy and Paediatric Care
At The Bio Mechanix, it’s our goal to help patients of all walks of life experience the natural, focused care that they need when they need it most-and pregnancy is no exception.
We’re proud to have chiropractors who hold certification with the ICPA, an organization dedicated to training chiropractors to better help children and pregnant women thrive naturally.
Here’s what you can expect from visiting us.
Benefits of Care
Many women choose to receive chiropractic care because it’s designed to help relieve tension in your pelvis while restoring proper alignment to the hips and spine on top of improving nervous system function. When you arrive, we’ll discuss your health history if you weren’t already a patient with us. We’ll also get to know your birthing goals and discuss any pain or problems you may be having.
Once we have that information, we’ll make a plan for care based on your specific needs. Please know that our adjustments are always gentle and focused to what your body requires, and we’ll never apply any force to your stomach-your baby will be entirely safe.
Many mums-to-be love that our moveable tables allow them to lie face down when receiving an adjustment, with their stomachs in an open area. We also offer pregnancy pillows for you to relax with during care with us to make you as comfortable as possible.
Many of our pregnant patients have enjoyed the following from visiting us regularly:
- Prepares the pelvis for easier pregnancy and birth by creating balance in pelvic bony structures, muscles and ligaments
- Removes torsion of ligaments that support the uterus thus potentially reducing aberrant tension to the uterus
- Reduces interference to your nervous system, which controls and coordinates all your systems and functions
- Decreases the potential for unnecessary medical intervention
- Promotes proper posture while you sit, sleep, drive or breastfeed
- Helps relieve pain in the pelvic girdle, hips, back, ribs and neck
- Helps smooth functioning of the sacroiliac joints
- Prevents or eliminates sciatica
- Improves proper pre-birthing position
- Reduces interference to your nervous system allowing for better development of your baby
- Pelvic balance allows your baby greater room to develop
- Supports development of your baby’s cranium, spine and other skeletal structures
- Offers your baby room to move into the best possible position for birth
- With proper foetal positioning, there is a significant likelihood of an easier labour and birth
- Reduces trauma caused by medical intervention that may be necessary during a difficult labour
What is the Webster Technique?
The Webster Technique helps reduce sacroiliac joint dysfunction and improves nerve and mechanical function in the pelvis. In pregnancy, you are at greater risk because of hormone surges, weight gain and shifting your centre of gravity to support your growing belly. Problems such as the misalignment of key pelvic muscles and ligaments may even prevent your baby from taking up the best possible position for birth, leading to a difficult labour. Fortunately, even if your baby is in the breech position, the Webster Technique can often help correct the situation.
75% of women who receive chiropractic care during pregnancy have improvement lower back pain, middle back pain, neck pain, headaches and vertigo.
We recommend you have your spine and pelvis checked regularly throughout your pregnancy to detect and adjust any developing difficulties. Not only will you maximise the health of your own system but also reduce stress to your baby’s developing spine and nervous system, benefitting you both.
The forces of labour can lead to understandable strain on muscular and joint tissues of the newborn resulting in musculoskeletal discomfort for the baby or even marked spasm such as is the case in torticollis. This can be observed in the baby if there is positional asymmetry but also a muscle spasm is painful and therefore babies will often show increased levels of crying, disturbed sleep and problems with feeding. Chiropractic assessment for your newborn can help to identify any explanations behind problems with sleeping, crying and feeding but importantly can also help to identify misalignment that may not yet be causing a problem with your child.
